If You Become My Friend

Capturing history: Four family’s journeys from Afghanistan to Worcester, MA

An Afghan man in traditional dress laughs and has his hand on the back of an American man.
About the Project

If You Become My Friend captures four unique stories of people who, after the Taliban took control of the country in 2021, fled Afghanistan and eventually resettled in Worcester, MA. These stories demonstrate the diversity of the Afghan languages and cultures, as well as experiences. Although no two stories are the same, we found a common theme of having to make the painful decision to leave behind everything they have ever known—their country, their homes, their jobs, their families, and their friends—to seek safety. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Arts Council, which was made possible with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funding from the City of Worcester.

For the protection of the families who participated, the film is not available to stream online.
